UniFi Access - Control Vehicle Access Using License Plate Unlock
Before you start, ensure you have read through and followed the instructions in Install Entrapment Protection Devices for License Plate Unlock Support and Connect Gate Hub to Gates and Pedestrian Side Door.
Connect Protect AI Cameras to Gate Hub (UA-Hub-Gate) to enable License Plate Unlock, a license plate recognition (LPR) technology, for efficient vehicle access control.
Benefits
- Enhanced security by keeping unauthorized vehicles out.
- Convenience for authorized users with seamless access.
- Records entry and exit data for better monitoring and accountability.
Requirements
- Protect application version 4.0.33 or later
- Protect AI Cameras (requires version 4.71.147 or later):
- Must be connected to a Gate Hub (see the Installation Guide for details)
- Supported camera models:
Pair Protect AI Camera with Gate Hub
- Hover your mouse over a gate and click the Manage icon.
- Go to Settings > Paired Devices > Select Devices > Cameras, select your Protect AI Cameras, and click Save.
- Click a paired camera and enable License Plate Unlock.
- Click Default, choose a detection zone, and click Confirm. Click Edit in Protect to add more detection zones.
- Go to Assign to and assign the camera to Gate - First Driveaway.
- Enable Record a Video Upon Door Unlock to have the camera automatically record a short video whenever the gate connected to the Gate Hub is open.
Configure Smart Detection Zone
When over 90% of your vehicle is in the detention zone, Protect AI Cameras can detect it, read the license plate, and send the information to Gate Hub for access authorization.
- Go to your Protect application > UniFi Devices.
- Select an AI Camera and go to Recording Mode.
- Scroll down to Detection & Privacy Zones > Edit Smart Detection Zones.
- Name the detection zone, specify the detection sensitivity, and select Vehicle in Detection Target.
- Drag to set the detection zone where your vehicle enters. This allows the Protect AI Camera to read your license plate.

Set Gate Closing to Manual
Important Safety Reminder: Before setting the gate to close manually, ensure your Gate Hub is connected to:
- An entrapment protection device or safety reversing sensor: Prevents doors from closing on objects or people.
- A gate position sensor: Ensures the gate opens only when the door is closed.
To manually close the gate and prevent it from opening as you exit the garage and pass through the detection zone:
- Adjust the smart detection zone as preferred to ensure your license plate is not detected when outside the zone.
- Drive your vehicle out of the detection zone.
- Manually close the gate using a remote control or the UniFi Access/UniFi Identity mobile app.
Assign License Plate to User
After pairing a Protect AI Camera with Gate Hub, assign license plates to users for vehicle access control. The camera identifies the assigned plates of active users and signals Gate Hub to open the gate upon valid authentication.
- Go to your Access application > Users.
- Select a user and go to Settings > Credentials > Add License Plate.
