Getting Started with UniFi Talk

UniFi Talk simplifies communication with VoIP, no PBX or SIP setup required, but supports third-party SIP on unlocked phones.

Requirements

To set up UniFi Talk, you’ll need:

  • A UniFi Console that supports the UniFi Talk application.
  • UniFi Talk Phones:
    • Subscription Locked:
      • Must be assigned to a user with a unique, personal UniFi Talk number.
      • Requires an active internet connection to function.
      • Only available in USA, Canada, and UK.
    • Subscription Unlocked:
      • Recommended for shared numbers (e.g., group configurations).
      • Can operate without a Talk subscription for internal calls only (at no cost).
      • Can be used worldwide with a third-party SIP provider.

Setting Up Your UniFi Talk System

To get started with UniFi Talk:

  1. Set Up Your UniFi Console:
    Ensure that your UniFi Console is set up and running UniFi Talk. To view installed applications, click the Settings icon on the left navigation bar and select Control Plane. Refer to How to Set Up UniFi for more details.
  2. Adopt Your UniFi Talk Phones:
    • Connect each phone to a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) port for power and network connectivity.
    • Open UniFi Talk on your console and navigate to the Devices section.
    • Select each connected phone and click Adopt to begin managing it.
  3. (Optional) Configure Your 3rd-Party SIP:
    If you have an existing provider, you can use your existing service with your UniFi Talk deployment. Learn more here.
  4. (Optional) Transfer Your Existing Phone Number:
    If you have an existing business number, transfer it to UniFi Talk. Follow this guide.
  5. Add Users:
    If you haven’t already, add users to your deployment.
  6. Assign Phones and Phone Numbers to Users:
