UniFi Protect - Set Up Your Doorbell
Add a G4 Doorbell Pro to your UniFi Protect installation for enhanced security with real-time video and visitor notifications.
Getting Started
Ensure you have everything you need:
- UniFi Protect already set up.
- (Optional) Doorbell Chime: Our UniFi Smart Chime offers a streamlined, wire-free setup. For additional recommendations, see Configure a Doorbell Chime.
-
Power supply:
- If using the G4 Doorbell Pro with our UniFi Chime, you can conveniently power your doorbell with a PoE Adapter or a wall adapter.
- If wiring your doorbell traditionally, ensure you have a compatible transformer* (16—24V AC, 20VA or greater, 50/60 Hz) to power your doorbell. Additionally, the transformer's output rating must match your chime's.
These required ratings are found on your doorbell's product page.
* Protect Doorbells in the EU already come with a suitable transformer.
Setup Process
- Refer to the Quick-Install Guide (QIG) for the G4 Doorbell Pro for easy mounting instructions.
- (Optional) Prepare your electrical circuit, per our wiring diagrams.
- Avoid this step by using the G4 Doorbell Pro powered with a PoE Adapter or an AC Wall Adapter, alongside our UniFi Smart Chime.
- Connect your mobile device to a WiFi that has connectivity with your UniFi Console and enable Bluetooth.
- Use the UniFi Protect Mobile App (iOS / Android) to adopt your doorbell.
- (Optional) Configure your doorbell chime, per the instructions below.

Wire Diagrams
Separate the doorbell wires into left and right as shown in the images below, then select the specific configuration below that matches your installation needs.
Note: Do not install any other components on the circuit if it is not pictured in the diagrams, including any optional diodes that may have been supplied with your internal relay chime.
Warning: When using the Doorbell Pro without an Internal Relay Chime, leave the Internal Relay Chime setting set to None. Changing it to Mechanical or Digital may cause permanent damage to the device.
Note: When two Doorbells are installed, please use a transformer with a power rating of 30VA or higher.
Note: When two internal relay chimes are installed, please use a transformer with a power rating of 30VA or higher.
Troubleshooting
My internal relay chime is buzzing or dinging repeatedly.
It is likely that there is a diode installed on the doorbell's electrical circuit. Remove this diode from the circuit. Alternatively, your chime power kit may be absent or damaged. Replace the chime power kit to confirm.
To avoid this wiring issue, you can opt to use our UniFi Smart Chime without any wiring necessary.
My internal relay chime only moves or sounds slightly.
It is likely that your transformer has an insufficient power/VA rating. Ensure that your transformer meets the base requirements (16—24V AC, 20VA or greater, 50/60 Hz), and that it matches the power rating for your internal relay chime. We recommend a transformer with a higher VA rating when multiple doorbells are in use.
To avoid this wiring issue, you can opt to use our UniFi Smart Chime without any wiring necessary.
My digital chime does not play the full tune.
It is possible that your UniFi Protect doorbell is not set to the digital mode. Ensure that this setting is toggled, and increase the amount of time that the chime is triggered.
