UniFi Protect - Optimizing Night Mode

Several UniFi Protect cameras are equipped with infrared (IR) LEDs to give them enhanced night vision.

During installation and operation, some factors may cause these LEDs to produce glares in the camera's Field of View (FOV). Special consideration must be made to ensure the quality of your Live Views and Recordings.

Reflections from Nearby Objects

Cameras with IR LEDs should be installed at least 60 centimeters, or 24 inches, away from neighboring walls and the ceiling. Nearby objects and surfaces may reflect infrared light into the camera and create a glare.

The camera below doesn't have at least 60 cm of separation from the ceiling, so its image quality is diminished as a result.

Residue on the Cover or Lens

While installing your camera, its lens and cover (if applicable) may collect dust, oil stains, or fingerprints. This can also occur if you wipe the lens or cover incorrectly.

If there is residue on the lens or cover, clean it with either lens wipes, a lens cloth and cleaning solution, or a soft cleaning cloth and rubbing alcohol whose alcohol concentration is less than 70%. Repeat this periodically to maintain a clear FOV.

The image below shows a lens with oil smears.

Moisture on the Cover (Dome Cameras Only)

When moisture droplets stick to the cover, the camera's infrared lights become scattered by the trapped moisture.

To avoid reduced image quality due to moisture droplets, wipe the cover's exterior with a lens cloth.

Cover Not Locked in Place (Dome Cameras Only)

Our dome cameras' removable covers have a locking mechanism to ensure an airtight seal. When the cover is not attached properly, the camera's infrared lights can be reflected back into its lens.

To mount the cover correctly:

  1. Align the small indentations on the cover and camera.
  2. Rotate the cover clockwise to securely fasten its rubber lining. The sealing strips should not be visible.

The example images below show the G4 Dome when its cover is properly attached (left), and when it's not (right).

Image quality is greatly reduced by an incorrectly attached cover.

Damaged Rubber Seal

When the rubber seal surrounding the lens is damaged, infrared light can leak in and distort the camera feed.

The images below show a normal seal (left) and a damaged one (right).
