Understanding Disk and Storage Health in UniFi
All storage devices have a usable lifespan and degrade over time. UniFi OS makes it simple to track the health of all disks, so you don’t have to worry about losing important data.
Healthy Disks
If your disk is healthy, you have nothing to worry about. Optimize your disk health to extend its lifespan by:
- Ensuring it is a compatible storage device.
- Maintaining a cool operating temperature.
- Minimize contact with dust and liquids.
- Avoiding unexpected shutdowns.
- We recommend our Switch Mission Critical or SmartPower PDU Pro.
At-Risk Disks
UniFi OS will notify you when your disk becomes at risk of failure. A disk could be at risk for a number of reasons, such as:
- Bad sectors being reported on the disk
- Uncorrectable disk errors detected
- Failures reported in the disk’s Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology system (SMART)
- The disk has reached 70% of the manufacturer’s recommended read and write lifespan (SSDs)
Clicking on an at-risk disk will display the specifics of the designation, but one thing should be certain: if you want to protect your stored data, you should replace the at-risk disk immediately. Even UniFi Network Video Recorders, which have advanced protection functions, should still have their disks replaced before failure.
For more information on replacing disks, see Storage Replacement.
Failed Disks
All disks reach the end of their lives eventually, which is why we strongly recommend backing up important data and replacing at-risk disks before total failure. If a disk does fail, simply replace it and recover your backup.
