UniFi Protect: Teleport Adoption

UniFi Protect Teleport Adoption lets a camera at one location record to a gateway or NVR at a different site, over the internet. This consolidates cameras from multiple sites onto a single recording destination without a site-to-site VPN.

Requirements

• Supported cameras: G6 Series (excluding Edge), AI Series and Doorbell Lite.
• Camera firmware: 5.5.29 or later.
• UniFi OS: 6.0.9 or later.
• UniFi Protect: 7.3.68 or later.
• Mobile app: UniFi Protect iOS 3.12 or later, or Android 3.9 or later.
• Destination Cloud Gateway: Teleport must be enabled on a supported Cloud Gateway.
• Recording destination: The Cloud Gateway itself, or an NVR connected to its local network.
• Internet connectivity: Both sites need internet access that allows a direct Teleport connection. A public WAN IP on the destination Cloud Gateway is required to ensure a stable operation.
• Admin permissions: The user performing the adoption must be an admin on both the Cloud Gateway and the NVR for the operation to succeed.

How to Adopt a Remote Camera

1. Ensure all devices are up to date and meet the requirements above.
2. Connect the mobile app to the same local network as the unadopted camera.
3. Wait for detected cameras to appear for adoption.
4. Select the desired recording destination and tap Adopt.

Once adoption completes, the camera records to the selected remote destination across the internet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a public IP required only at the destination site? Will the camera work behind CGNAT, double NAT, or a cellular connection?

A public IP is required on the WAN port of the Cloud Gateway at the destination site. The Teleport cameras only require internet access to connect.

Is port forwarding or any manual firewall configuration required at either site?

Teleport configures the connection automatically, and port forwarding is not required. Ensure firewall policies at either site do not block the Teleport connection.

Does the camera's location need a UniFi Gateway, or can it use any router and internet provider?

No. The camera can connect through a third-party router or cellular connection, provided the network allows a direct Teleport connection.

Can an already-adopted camera be moved to a remote destination, or must it be removed or factory reset first?

The camera must be factory reset to switch from a local connection to a Teleport connection.

How much upload bandwidth does each camera need, and are there limits on remote cameras or simultaneous connections?

Bandwidth requirements depend on recording resolution, encoding, and camera quantity. Ensure both sides have ample available bandwidth to maintain a stable connection.

What happens to recording during an internet outage?

Cameras with edge recording capability can continue recording to local storage on the camera. Edge recording footage can be downloaded once the camera reconnects.

Which cameras are supported?

Only G6 Series (excluding Edge), AI Series and Doorbell Lite are supported. Older generations and third-party cameras do not support Teleport adoption.

Do live view, audio, detections, notifications, and other camera features work the same as with locally adopted cameras, and are there any additional fees or licenses?

All camera features are supported over a Teleport connection, with no additional license required.
