UniFi Protect Frequently Asked Questions

What is UniFi Protect?

UniFi Protect is an evolution of UniFi Video 3. We built UniFi Protect from the ground up for the best video viewing and reviewing experience possible. UniFi Protect launches with a core feature set optimized for full-time recording, fast timelapse review, and easy setup. Future updates will bring advanced settings for recording modes, fine-grained alert control, and other features that our UniFi Video 3 power users are familiar with.

What will happen to UniFi Video 3?

UniFi Video is reaching End of Life (EOL). Please see the announcement and information here.

Does UniFi Protect have the same features as UniFi Video 3?

UniFi Protect is a completely new application designed to lay the foundation for a full-featured and high performance next generation surveillance platform. UniFi Protect adds highly optimized timeline playback, better scaling on low-cost Cloud Key Gen2 Plus hardware, and all-new mobile applications designed for maximum speed in variable network conditions. Some advanced customizations available in UniFi Video 3 are not yet available in UniFi Protect, but we will be adding these features to UniFi Protect in future software updates.

What camera models does UniFi Protect support?

UniFi Protect supports all camera models that work with the latest UniFi Video 3 release and will also support all future camera hardware releases. This includes all G2 and G3 Ubiquiti cameras. First generation airCams are not be supported.

What NVR hardware does UniFi Protect support?

UniFi Protect is available on the UNVR and UniFi Cloud Key Gen2 Plus

Will there be a self-install package for Windows, Linux, or macOS?

Our current focus for UniFi Protect is to make a great user-experience that has tight software/hardware integration and can be installed/operated with confidence. We are focusing all resources on this goal and we do not want to add additional variables to the challenge at this time.

How can I migrate from UniFi Video 3 to UniFi Protect?

Migration of camera management is simple using a configuration backup from UniFi Video 3. For detailed instructions, refer to this article: How to Migrate from UniFi Video 3 to UniFi Protect.

Can I migrate back from UniFi Protect to UniFi Video 3?

Yes, but we do not offer an automated way to migrate. You will need to forget the cameras in UniFi Protect, perform a factory reset via the camera web interface, then manually downgrade the firmware to the bundled firmware release in UniFi Video 3. Refer to the release notes for the latest UniFi Video 3 version available in the Community.

How do I upgrade UniFi Protect?

UniFi Protect has a built-in upgrade system accessible from the web interface under Settings, and Automatic Upgrades can be optionally enabled.

What browsers are officially supported for web access?

UniFi Protect is optimized and designed to work with Google Chrome and Firefox. Safari support will be added when Safari’s WebRTC support is updated to include all WebRTC features needed by the Protect software.

How do I access UniFi Protect remotely?

UniFi Protect uses a hybrid cloud which leverages WebRTC to establish a peer-to-peer (NVR to client) encrypted connection using https://protect.ui.com/ for browser access. For Mobile access, use the UniFi Protect mobile apps for Android and iOS.

Do the mobile applications require internet access to use?

Yes, as the mobile applications leverage the Cloud service to broker the initial connection, as well as receive real-time push updates. Direct connection options are on the roadmap.

Does UniFi Protect record full-time or motion only?

UniFi Protect records full-time on all connected cameras, and uses motion detection to create Events to easily identify recordings of interest. Adaptive Bitrate will automatically reduce the video bitrate used during periods of low activity to reduce storage utilization while also maintaining acceptable video quality during full-time recordings. Further configuration options for recording modes per camera are on the roadmap.

How do I view full-time recordings?

The Timeline feature will allow you to review full-time recordings in a color-coded interface to identify events where motion was detected. To enable the Timeline on the web interface, ensure that your UniFi Protect is updated to the latest version on the Settings page.

Can I download full-time recordings from the Timelapse?

The ability to download video from the Timelapse is available in both the mobile applications and the web interface.

Advanced Configuration

What is the camera password?

Upon managing a camera with UniFi Protect, the controller will configure a strong camera password. If you need to access the camera web interface, you can retrieve the configured camera password from the Settings menu.

Can I connect to the cameras via SSH?

SSH is disabled by default for security purposes. Users should not have any need to access camera SSH during normal operation. Advanced users can enable camera SSH via the mobile applications.

Can custom SSL certificates be configured for browser access?

No, we recommend using https://protect.ui.com/ to avoid browser certificate warnings. Keep in mind that our Cloud service only functions as a connection broker between the client and the NVR, after which data including video is communicated peer-to-peer and fully encrypted.

Can UniFi Video and UniFi Protect run on the same network simultaneously?

Yes, you may even run multiple instances of UniFi Video 3 and UniFi Protect on the same L2 network. Cameras on the same subnet managed by a different controller will be identified with a “Managed by Other” status.

Can a camera be managed by both UniFi Video and Protect at the same time?

No, a camera may only be managed by a single NVR at a time.

Cloud Key Gen2 Plus

How many cameras are supported on the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus?

While there is no hard limit configured at the software level, we recommend a conservative maximum of 20 cameras on a single Cloud Key Gen2 Plus when the UniFi Network controller is disabled. When running both the UniFi Network controller and UniFi Protect on the same Cloud Key Gen2 Plus, we recommend a maximum of 15 UniFi Cameras and 50 UniFi Network Devices.

Can the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus hard drive be upgraded?

Yes, the included 1TB hard drive can be upgraded by replacing it with a larger capacity 2.5” SATA drive. The drive cage is tool-less and supports drives up to 15mm tall. With the latest Cloud Key firmware release, the UniFi Protect configuration will be automatically restored on the replacement hard drive, however videos will not be migrated. Refer to the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus Quick Start Guide for replacement instructions.

How do I upgrade the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus firmware?

You can upgrade the firmware using the UniFi Management Portal (ULP), which is accessible by opening the Cloud Key’s IP address without specifying Protect’s port (for example: ) and clicking Manage Cloud Key. Upgrading the Cloud Key firmware will also upgrade any included controller applications to the latest version available when the firmware was released. We recommend keeping your Cloud Key firmware up to date for the best performance and stability.

Do I need to use a Switch or PoE injector to power the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus?

We recommend you use an 802.3af compliant you can also use a USB-C adapter to power your Cloud Key. Other than that any QualComm certified Quick Charge 2.0 or 3.0 adapter can be used with your Cloud Key Gen2 or Gen2 Plus.
