UniFi LTE Backup Best Practices

UniFi’s LTE Backup and LTE Backup Pro are designed to ensure business continuity by maintaining internet connectivity during primary WAN outages. When deploying them in your network, it is essential to configure them properly to avoid unnecessary costs and performance issues.

Benefits

Your UniFi LTE Backup will automatically establish a GRE Tunnel with your gateway from anywhere on your network. This presents a few unique benefits:

  • Seamless failover Internet without occupying a WAN port.
  • Freedom to place the ULTE Backup anywhere on your network, enabling optimal LTE signal strength.

Selective Network Backup

When first adopted, U-LTE automatically grants all networks access to the backup internet connection, indicated by a U-LTE icon next to each network. However, providing backup to all networks is not recommended due to limited bandwidth and data caps.

To disable U-LTE Backup on a network, go to Settings > Networks, click a network to open it, and then disable U-LTE Internet Backup in its features.

You should carefully select which networks should have access, to optimize performance and cost efficiency. For example:

  • A Point of Sale (PoS) Network should have U-LTE access enabled, to ensure transactions continue if the primary WAN fails.
  • A Guest Network should have U-LTE access disabled, to prevent excessive data usage and potential overages.

Managing Data Limits

To prevent unexpected costs, set a data limit for your LTE Backup:

  1. Navigate to UniFi Devices and click on the LTE Backup to open its device panel.
  2. Click on Settings.
  3. Adjust settings to manage limits:
    • Set a Data Limit: Set a maximum usage cap to ensure costly overages do not occur.
      • Note: U-LTE automatically purchases additional data unless a limit is set, so defining a cap is essential for cost control.

Set an LTE Data Warning: Configure data thresholds to alert administrators when usage is approaching the plan’s limit.
