(ARCHIVED) airControl - Using Configuration Tags

This article has been archived.

This article is current to the last version of airControl, but will not be updated further since airControl has been retired.

Readers will learn how to back up and restore configurations to multiple devices in airControl using configuration tags. Please keep in mind that the creation of configuration-tags on unmonitored devices is not possible. The Configuration Tags mentioned in this article should not to be confused with Device Tags which are explained in this article: airControl - Customizing Device Tags.

The simultaneous configuration backup is assigned a user-given name that is called "configuration tag". At any later point in time, this tag can be selected to restore all saved configurations on the devices covered by said tag. Applying configuration tags to devices is particularly useful to save the "last known successful configuration" point of a particular network-segment; and to restore it when the current configuration does not perform as expected.

How to Create a Configuration Tag

To create a configuration tag follow these instructions:

  1. Launch airControl and select a set of devices from the Devices list.
  2. Right-click and select "Tag Configuration".
  3. Type in a unique name for the configuration tag.
  4. A tag will be created in the "Device Configuration Tags" folder, which in turn resides under the "Other resources" folder. The tag will contain a set of devices and the date of the latest configuration-snapshot that was taken on each particular device.

How to Restore a Configuration

To restore configuration on devices tagged by a particular configuration tag follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on a configuration tag and select "Restore Configurations from Tag".
  2. A "Restore Configuration" task panel will appear, click "Start restoring" to begin application of configuration snapshots that were saved in that tag.
NOTE:airControl automatically detects and backs up changes on all devices on which monitoring was started, so creating configuration tags is instantaneous, taking virtually no time. Remember configuration tags cannot be created on unmonitored devices.
