UniFi Talk - Adopt devices

To use your Talk phones and other devices, you first need to adopt them to the UniFi Talk application.

Device adoption is the process of connecting a UniFi device to its corresponding UniFi application so said device can be managed by it.

This article explains how UniFi Talk device adoption works and provides recommendations for troubleshooting issues that may arise during the adoption process.

For more information about the device adoption process, see UniFi - Device adoption.

Pre-adoption requirements

Before adopting your Talk device(s), make sure they are:

  • Set up correctly according to their respective Quick Start Guides.
  • Turned on and receiving sufficient power.
  • Connected to the same local network as the UniFi OS Console hosting your Talk application.

Note: Most Talk devices are powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE). We recommend using a UniFi PoE switch to power them. Please check your UniFi Talk device's Quick Start Guide to verify its PoE requirements.

Adopt a Talk device with the Talk application

To adopt a UniFi Talk device:

  1. Click the Add link in the adoption prompt that appears in the top-right corner of your Talk dashboard.

Troubleshooting Talk device adoption issues

The Talk device doesn't appear for adoption.

  1. Ensure that the UniFi OS Console running your Talk application (UniFi Dream Machine Pro or Cloud Key Plus) and the Talk device are on the same local network (e.g., connected to the same switch).
  2. Verify that the device is receiving sufficient power:
    1. For PoE devices, ensure that they are connected to a PoE switch that can adequately power them. Then, confirm that each device's PoE cable is connected to its PoE In port.
    2. If you're using the Conference Speaker for power passthrough, verify that the cable from your PoE switch is inserted into the Conference Speaker's PoE In port. Then, ensure that the cable connecting your Talk device is also connected to the speaker's PoE Out port.
    3. If your device(s) still don't appear for adoption, try using different ports, another set of cables, or a different power outlet to eliminate the possibility of a faulty cable or power source.

Note: For more information about your device's power requirements, check its page in the Ubiquiti Store or see UniFi - Supported PoE Input and Output Modes.

    4. Update your Talk application and UniFi OS Console to their latest versions to ensure maximum stability:
      1. To update your UniFi OS Console:
        1. Go to the Remote Access Portal (unifi.ui.com) and select your UniFi OS Console.
        2. Navigate to the System SettingsUpdates page.
        3. Click the update link in the Status field, if an update is available.
      2. To update your Talk application:
        1. Go to the Remote Access Portal (unifi.ui.com) and select your UniFi OS Console.
        2. Navigate to the System SettingsUpdates page.
        3. Click the Update button in the Talk section, if an update is available.

The device is Managed by Other.

If the Talk device has a Managed by Other designation, factory-reset it and try adopting the device again.

The adoption fails or stalls.

  1. Reboot the Talk device and the UniFi OS Console, or
  2. Factory-reset the Talk device.
