UniFi Gateway - Static IPv6 and DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation
Notes & Requirements
- ISP that provides either a static IPv6 address range or uses DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation.
- Generally, the UniFi gateway will be directly connected to the ISP instead of behind a router.
- Confirm with your ISP whether static IPv6 addressing or DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation is supported.
- In case of static IPv6 addressing, the ISP will be able to provide you the address range and prefix length.
- In case of DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation, the ISP will be able to provide you the Prefix Delegation Size.
IPv6 Connection Types
Both the Internet (WAN) and LAN Network settings have an IPv6 configuration section. In order to get IPv6 working in your network, it needs to be configured on both the WAN and LAN.
If your ISP provides DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation and you want to assign IPv6 addresses to clients on the Default LAN network, then configure IPv6 as follows:
- WAN (DHCPv6) - The Prefix Delegation Size needs to match what is provided by the ISP (often a /48 or /56).
- LAN (Prefix Delegation) - The IPv6 addresses will be automatically assigned to client devices based on the provided range from the ISP.
ATTENTION:
- If DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation is configured but not working, then it is possible that the ISP does not support this feature.
- An indicator is that the UniFi gateway obtains an IPv6 address on the WAN, however clients behind the UniFi gateway do not receive IPv6 addresses.
If your ISP provides Static IPv6 and you want to assign IPv6 addresses to clients on the Default LAN network, then configure IPv6 as follows:
- WAN (Static) - Specify the IPv6 address and Prefix Length provided by your ISP. This is often a /64.
- LAN (Static) - Specify the LAN range provided by your ISP. If your ISP provides you a /48 or /56, then this can be divided into several /64 subnets (one for each LAN). Optionally enable the DHCPv6 server or assign IPv6 addresses via SLAAC.
ATTENTION:
- If you are only provided a single /64 IPv6 range or it is not working, then it is possible that the ISP does not support connecting another router behind their equipment. Confirm this with your ISP.
- An indicator is that the UniFi gateway has Internet access, however clients behind the UniFi gateway receive IPv6 addresses but do not have Internet access.
